SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) - The City Council of Gering held their regular meeting and approved to have a Personnel Committee meeting to oversee the process in filling vacant city jobs.

“Periodically we’ll have these basically what we do we just go over their job description,” says Pat Heath City Administrator of Gering. “What we do is well staff will discuss the changes in this case changes in personnel. There is three positions one for the fire department one for the finance office and one for the waste water department.”

The committee will discuss the job description and what kind of compensation is to be offered.

“What we do is go over their job description with them and we go over the pay scales with them,” says Heath. “The pay scales are based on a study done statewide that we use that places people in a position between a city half our size and double our size and so we pay average of that and that’s what state statutes require.”

Gering City Council unanimously approved a measure to form a special committee to find a new councilman to replace Parrish Abel.

“We’ll review those in two weeks so once that period is over we’ll take about a week to review those applications,” says Mayor Tony Kaufman of Gering. “We’ll try to find the time that would work for all the applicants and council to meet and we’ll have an interview session with the ultimate goal of having an appointment ready for the March 8 council meeting.”

“We hope that they participate,” says Kaufman. We do some assignments there committee assignments as well as other boards and commission assignments so that they represent the city in other capacities. We try to delegate some of those responsibilities so it’s not all the burden of the mayor and our administrator. It also gets a more well rounded experience for our council members.”
