WNCC volleyball team claims Region IX title with win over NJC

Cougars earn five set win over NJC to earn trip to national tournament later in April.

CASPER, Wyo. (KNEP) - The Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team heading back to the national tournament.

WNCC got 25 kills from sophomore Karen Cordero as the Cougars picked up a five set win over Northeastern Junior College in the Region IX Championship Match (12-25, 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 15-7).

The Cougars had to come from behind to pick up the win on Friday night. NJC opened the game with a big run and rolled to a 25-12 first set win.

NJC kept the momentum in set two as they raced out to another lead. WNCC answered and would earn a very close 25-23 set two win to even the match. Cougars again answered NJC runs in set three to come from behind to win set three 25-20. Set four NJC opened an early lead and they would hold off WNCC to win set four 25-23.

That would force a winner takes all fifth set. In the fifth set the Cougars were the team to take an early lead as they pushed ahead 10-4 and they never looked back winning the set and match 15-7.

In addition to Cordero’s 25 kills, Alex Hernandez finished with 12 kills, 10 digs and 3 solo blocks. Olivia Schaub chipped in with 10 kills and Andrea Tsvetanova added 50 set assists, 19 points and 15 digs.

WNCC will take part in the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament set for April 15-17 in West Plains, Missouri.
