Western Nebraska Community College expands college dual credit courses with Gering High School
Classes will begin this fall
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) -Students had limited access to courses at Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) and on Tuesday the college announced dual enrollment which will offer an additional 33 college courses for juniors and seniors. With the expansion incoming freshman can plan their careers early. Some of the classes include skilled tech trade programs and human services according to WNCC staff and Gering High School (GHS) staff.
“One young man said this unbelievable I never thought I would be in this opportunity or this environment right now where I have all these options to take college credits,” said Rick Marez Guidance Counselor GHS. “He’s planning on starting his own business he wants to go into marketing and he wants to take some accounting. He’s already scheduling his senior year for dual credit opportunities to get him ready for his career path.”
“Now it’s more career interest driven it’s more skill set driven,” said Marez. “Now the conversations will change because we can focus the courses to what their strengths are what they are interested in. It’s exciting for me now I get to talk to them about what do I want to do when I grow up kind of thing versus what do I need to graduate.”
WNCC staff said the idea is to maximize learning for the surrounding schools and give students a taste of what the college environment is like.
“When I stepped into this role last fall was to make sure that we are servicing our schools the way we should be,” said Mai Lee Olsen CollegeNOW! Director WNCC. “Throughout those meetings these have been some of those conversations and so Gering is kind of the first one we’re bringing on board and slowly but surely other schools are joining on those ranks.”
“We get to specialize more with what you want to do,” said Olsen. “Now we’re giving a little bit of a taste of specialized foundational material that can bring you forward into your new passion.”
