Twin Cities Development seeks funding for Northfield Haven Project
Twin Cities Development announces plans to construct 15 new independent living facilities for young adults with disabilities in Gering.
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) - Twin Cities Development (TCD) is seeking funding for a project constructing 15 new independent living facilities for young adults with disabilities in Gering, TCD announced Tuesday.
The Northfield Haven Project will be a 14,000 square foot facility in the former Medical Wing at Northfield Apartments in Gering.
Twin Cities Development Executive Director Rawnda Pierce says TCD was approached nearly two years ago by a group of families looking for special facilities to accommodate their children. The families mentioned the independent living facilities available in Omaha and Lincoln and said their children should have a place to stay in their own hometowns.
Since then, TCD has applied for numerous grants --even receiving $500,000 from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development to help with construction. Still, Pierce says the money is far from enough.
The costs of building materials and construction have skyrocketed during the pandemic, leaving developers scrambling to offset the shortages.
Now, the Oregon Trail Community Foundation has started a non-profit through the WyoBraska Gives Campaign dedicated specifically to funding the Northfield Haven Project.
Pierce says all funds donated to the project are 100% tax deductible. Residents interested in donating are encouraged to reach out to the Oregon Trail Community Foundation or Twin Cities Development.
