WNCC baseball team claims regional title
Cougars earn 4-3 win over Southeast to claim tournament title.
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) - The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team entered the postseason dropping six of their last eight games.
Cougars picked the perfect time to bounce back and start a winning streak. After earning a first round sweep over Trinidad State last weekend, WNCC picked up three more wins this weekend to claim the Region IX title.
Cougars clinched the title thanks to a 4-3 win over Southeast in the championship round.
WNCC got strong pitching from start to finish as local players Trevor Dubray (Alliance High School) and Harold Baez (Westco Zephyrs/Scottsbluff High School) both held steady on the mound in the title game.
Dubray getting the start and going 5 innings giving up 3 runs and striking out 5. Baez closed the game out pitching 4 innings of shut-out baseball and striking out 6 batters.
WNCC produced just enough runs to help the pitching including a 3 run second inning and another run in the third inning.
Michael Felton, Matt Womack, and Jayden Orozco all finished 2 for 4 on the day. While Caleb Coats, Luis Alcantara, Orozco, and Quinn McCafferty all had an RBI.
It’s the Cougars first Region IX title in 14 years and sends them into the district finals with Central Arizona, Yavapai College, and College of Southern Nevada. Yavapai College will be the host team and the tournament will run May 20 to May 22.
WNCC will open action against defending national champions Central Arizona on Thursday.
The district finals winner moves into the NJCAA Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.
