Big Boy Steam Locomotive in Kimball
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) -The union pacific big boy 4014 is full steam ahead on it’s month long journey. The big boy is historic because there are only 25 of these trains ever made, and only 8 remain. Those eight trains are on static display in museums, except 4014 that regained the title as the largest and most powerful operating steam locomotive in the world. This train weighs in at 1.2 million pounds and is 132 feet long. On it’s month voyage it will go to places like North Platte, Kansas City, Fort Worth, Houston, New Orleans, St. Louis, and will end its journey in Denver on Labor Day before it returns home to Cheyenne.
One man came a long way to see this historic moment.
Chase Millsap came all the way from Washington State to see history take place. He says, “So this is going to be a big trip for me, I came all the way from Washington State to make this trip all happen. I have been doing trips like this for many many years and followed SP44-49 the 844 and a few other trains throughout the country over the years. And I mostly do these trips just for fun it’s a hobby that I have been doing for so many years and by far this has basically been a blast from the past. We live in the old time steam locomotive era that we don’t see in the 21st century anymore.”
The Train Conductor tells us his favorite part of this months long journey. He says, “ Well it is a very special experience because everywhere we go we see crowds just like this. If you look out into the crowd and you see all the happy faces and all of the enthusiasm and look at those young kids out there were actually us not too long ago.”
He also wanted to remind everyone who is going to travel to see this historic train to make sure to stand at least 25 feet back for your safety.
