Old West Balloon Fest
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) - The old west balloon fest has been flying over Scottsbluff this week. This event is a Scottsbluff classic. It is a hot air balloon fest that was super popular in the 80s and 90s and got re-inflated back in 2015. The location has changed to the Mitchell airfield, which has given the opportunity to host more pilots with their balloons. Many people travel from nearby states to participate in the festivities. During the week there is up to 80 colorful hot air balloons filling the sky. Flying these balloons may look easy, but it’s not as simple as it seems.
Coleen Johnson, Executive Director of the Old West Balloon Fest, says, “It’s a process it’s just like a regular fixed wing pilot. You go to ground school, you have to have exams, written an oral exams, so people think they can just jump into a hot air balloon and fly but you do have to have license.”
The Festival is currently happening until August 14th, 2021.
