Hay Springs goes down to the wire in Class D6 state championship game

S.E.M. holds off Hay Springs 21-20 to claim six man state title.

KEARNEY, Neb. (KNEP) - The Hay Springs football team came within a play away from upsetting top seed and undefeated Sumner-Eddyville-Miller in the Class D6 State Championship Game. Mustangs holding on to pick up a 21-20 win on Friday night in Kearney. Both teams played stellar defense in the first half as only one touchdown was scored to give S.E.M. an 8-0 halftime lead.

In the second half Hay Springs senior Gage Mintken took over scoring three touchdowns and rushing for over 100 yards on the night.

S.E.M. took a 21-14 lead going into the fourth quarter but Hay Springs would answer late scoring on a Mintken touchdown. Hawks went for the game leading two point kick but it was blocked by the Mustangs and they would hold on for the title.

Hay Springs season ends at 8-4 on the year. S.E.M. earns their first ever state championship in high school football.
